ONE SQUARE METRE
Photography meets Urban Art

The exhibition “ONE SQUARE METRE – Photography meets Urban Art” puts a design icon of everyday culture in the centre which once came as a present of the Allied British Forces to Berlin: the red telephone box. With this district-wide exhibition the Kommunale Galerie Berlin remembers the presence of the Allied British Forces and commemorates the end of World War II 70 years ago.

The red telephone box, in it’s home country a design icon as well as a beloved popular symbol today is an epitome of “Britishness”. It was created by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott as the result of a design competition awarded by The Royal Fine Art Commission, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the British Postmaster General. Three out of formerly five original red British telephone boxes still exist on their original locations in Berlin (Fehrbelliner Platz, Mathilde-Jakob-Platz, Greenwichpromenade). They are the initial point of the artistic concept. ONE SQUARE METRE is symbolic for the groundfloor of a red british telephone box that will be converted into an exhibition venue in public space. Urban interventions replace the telephone boxes at their former locations (Rathaus Tempelhof, Rathaus Spandau).

In the telephone boxes renown German and British artists will show current positions of art from photography through painting up to urban art. For the exhibition the telephone boxes will be converted into “art satellites”, all connected to a “base station”: the Kommunale Galerie Berlin. There selected works of the five participating artists can be seen in an exceptional showcase.

The connecting element between the works of all participating artists is that they have objects or situations of everyday life as a content or formative basis and express this in different artistic approaches. With this exhibition project artists from the UK and Germany can enter into an artistic dialogue. The works of the artists involved should reflect the perceptions on the everyday life from a contemporary and historical perspective and give the possibility to the viewer to explore the icons of the British and German everyday culture.

ENGLISH
Beyond melancholia is the first and initial exhibition of a unique cooperation: For a series of presentations the Reinking Collection will collaborate with the Museum für Völkerkunde Hamburg.
In the context of the cooperation, works from a collection of contemporary art and works from the collections of an ethnological museum are exhibited together. In that way all exhibitions of this series unite not only works of different epochs but also from different countries and cultural areas.
With traditional and contemporary works being shown together, new questions are raised relating to art from the past and the present and attention is drawn to their uniting aspects. The series of exhibitions focuses on human sentiments and the debate of key questions of our existence.

The Central point of the first part of the exhibition are the emotions of melancholia, gloom and grief, but beyond this also their counterparts happiness, ecstasy and glee. How can you grasp these moments? How can you live them and how can you particularly express them? The exhibited selection of works is supposed to be an area of projection for the own thoughts, inspire a dialogue with oneself and in that way give an opportunity to align and to locate oneself. Though no absolute answers can be given, an opportunity is presented to get a better sense of ones personal localisation in regard to our questions of time, space, perception and identity.

Reinking Collection
With works from approximately fifty contemporary artists along with artifacts from Africa, Oceania, and America, the exhibition presents one of the most unusual private collections in Germany. Its theme is the current perspective with regard to those artistic attitudes which concentrate upon the experience of life on an existential level and bring this focus to expression in each respective work in an impressive manner. The multiple meanings and aesthetic power of the objects and images, their auratic energy and occasional dramatic transformation point toward artistic practices which are repeatedly capable of transcending the borders of material reality in the direction of the unconscious, dreams, and death.
